John writes that Jesus’ last words were, “It is finished” (Jn. 19:30). However, Luke writes, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Lk. 23:46). Which is true?
Luke recorded that after he said these words “he breathed his last.” Therefore, Jesus couldn’t have said anything after this. John 19:30 explains that Jesus said, “It is finished,” but then, John added that Jesus “bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” When Jesus “gave up his spirit,” it makes perfect sense that he would cry out “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit,” as Luke records (Lk. 23:46). Therefore, no contradiction is warranted.
