Why does Paul quote Jeremiah 9:23-24?

Claim:

Critics often accuse Paul of taking OT passages out of context. Is this the case?

Response:

In Jeremiah 9, the wise person is the one who obeys God to avoid judgment (Jer. 9:12, 14). Paul sees a parallel between the destruction of Jerusalem in Jeremiah 9 and the modern person’s destruction through rejecting Christ. In both passages, we should not boast in wealth, might, or wisdom (Jer. 9:23; 1 Cor. 1:26). Instead, we should boast in understanding and knowing God (Jer. 9:24). This OT citation helps prove Paul’s point.
