CLAIM: Job says, “He who goes down to Sheol does not come up” (Job 7:9). Does this passage deny the concept of the resurrection?

RESPONSE: The context makes clear what Job has in mind. In the next verse, he says, “He will not return again to his house, nor will his place know him anymore” (v.10). In other words, the dead will not return to their ordinary life; they will return to an immortal life.

Job 14:12 explains that the dead will not rise “until the heavens are no longer.” This fits with other accounts about the resurrection, which will occur “at the end time” (Dan. 11:40) or “on the last day” (Jn. 11:24). It is in this context that Job prays that God would remember him (Job 14:13).
